Tiger Year Celebration in Kolkata

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Wow! Valentines day is knocking at the door. This time, I'm gonna celebrate the day in a special manner. Guess what? I'm flying to Kolkata so as to catch hold of the charm of tiger year celebration. The festivity falls on the same date i.e 14th February and preparation for it is at acme.

The metro-city of West Bengal can be addressed as a cornucopia of celebration that unfolds the sense of happiness, prosperity and unity, all together. My friend 'Angela' has her home at China Town in Kolkata. Every year, she invites me on new year parties and I miss no chance to participate in the electrifying lion dance and colorful parade with lanterns. These two are prime attraction in the festive ambiance. The unique dance forms carries a wholesome packet of mythic legends and folklores. Though I'm not thorough with all the stories, I can only say that Chinese believe it as a celebration of victory over evil.

Unlike any festivals, there exist an interesting philosophy behind the declaration of a Chinese New Year. According to legend, one of the 12 animals represents the significance of the New Year. This year, Chinese astrology brings into limelight, the lucky 'Tiger' year, which will offer the power of competition and success to one and all.

I'm sure to wear an impressive tiger mask and ink my body parts with a tag-'Save Our Tigers'. Lets see how much does it work to create social awareness about saving our national animal. Add to this, I turned up more crazy, when, last night, Angela called up and told all that is going on in the city. Enthusiasts are decorating their surrounding with articles, red and gold in color. The two colors are believed to welcome wealth and good fate. Therefore, I have decided to gift her a beautiful prom dress of the same color combination.

Well, if you are planning to surprise your friend, then I must suggest you to buy some packets of noodles and dried fruits. The former represents longevity and the latter speak about togetherness.

Beside all these fun and frolic, I think, my taste buds will be satisfied when I'll receive the chance to relish on some lip-smacking chinese dishes. Delicacies like 'Maa faa' made up of eggs, maida and sugar are my favorite. Chinese sausages and wafers made up of fish and prawn are greatly sold in China Town. I shall take back home a few packets for my niece.
